PURPOSE STATEMENT
This position will perform journey-level HVAC work throughout the district, including new construction, and maintenance, repair and alteration of district buildings and facilities. This position works closely on a team with other skilled craft and trades employees to provide support and customer service in the facilities and operations of Walla Walla Public Schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Install, operate, maintain and repair all types of refrigeration systems, including kitchen equipment, air-conditioning, chilled water and heating systems.
- Diagnose, inspect, trouble shoot, and overhaul electrical control circuits, including solid state, using manuals, blueprints and equipment knowledge.
- Alter, maintain, repair or install wiring, cables, switches, controls, fuse boxes, breaker panels, instrument panels, distribution panels, buzzed and bell circuits, power circuits and communication circuits.
- Modify, adjust, maintain, repair or install electric motors, electrical equipment, and instruments such as pumps, clocks, lamps, stoves, electrical meters, timers, fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, power tools and motors.
- Order and stock temperature controls, valves, and related parts for repair and installation of electrical, mechanical, electronic and pneumatic control systems.
- Operate and maintain cooling towers, including water treatment systems.
- Recharge units with proper refrigerant when necessary, and maintain and repair compressor units.
- Keep appropriate records.
- Test, make measurements, and adjust all types of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems for efficient performance.
- Move supplies and materials as directed.
- Maintain effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public for safety, security and positive public relations.
- May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
- Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities and Operations.

MENTAL DEMANDS
- Required to deal with a wide range of individuals and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Required to stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to perform tasks requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion.
- Must be able to twist the upper torso and neck and kneel frequently. Must have good upper body strength to handle, grasp and grip objects on a constant basis using the upper extremities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED
- Three to five years experience with HVAC systems, repair and maintenance.
- Journey-level certificate with an industrial maintenance background preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including pneumatic and electronic controls, cooling towers and heat pumps.
- Computer and energy management system training or knowledge.
- Experience in the electrical field, experience and/or training in a variety of building maintenance tasks, including low-pressure boiler systems is preferred.
- Basic computer skills for the use of district e-mail and on-line work order system.
- Must possess a strong work ethic and proven ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of others.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
Licenses/Special Requirements
- Must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain a religious or medical exemption by October 18, 2021.
- Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
- Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
HVAC on the Classified Salary Schedule A
Eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week, 260 days per school year
