Assistant Managing Editor
The Sacramento Bee is seeking a collaborative, dynamic news leader to serve as assistant managing editor. This is a key leadership role in one of the West Coast’s best metro newsrooms, and we’re looking for a talented journalist to work with both editors and reporters to elevate our journalism, reach new audiences and serve our community.
The Sacramento Bee’s assistant managing editor knows how to spot a great story and help a reporter go get it. This editor must have the highest journalism ethics, sound news judgment and strong story editing skills. This editor should be energized by coaching and collaborating with reporters, editors, visual journalists and other California newsrooms.
This editor will play an integral role in shaping The Sacramento Bee’s metro coverage and producing accountability and investigative journalism, solutions-focused stories, utility news and information, and breaking news coverage that is first and best on the most important issues to our readers.
The successful candidate will be a proven news leader who can draw the highest quality journalism from our reporters, editors and visual journalists and drive newsroom collaboration. This editor should have experience in newsroom transformation and be prepared to approach the role with fresh ideas about how to serve a diverse audience.
As assistant managing editor, this journalist will play an important role in the continued transformation of our newsroom into an audience-focused digital news operation consistent with McClatchy’s longstanding mission of independent, essential local news that serves the public. This includes setting coverage and beat strategies that reflect the Sacramento region’s growth, diversity and economic drivers.
Success will be measured by the distinctive journalism produced, as well as audience and subscriber growth for that differentiated content. This job requires a command of audience analytics and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results, as well as a desire to experiment, iterate and adjust as the news environment dictates. Empowering journalists in the newsroom to learn and employ audience-focused approaches to journalism is key to success.
