Position Summary: We are looking for a Marine Mechanic Helper to join our marine services department and also to create an eligibility list for potential openings next year.
This person will under general supervision, perform a wide variety of marine support functions related to the upkeep, maintenance, and repair of U.S. Coast Guard certified small passenger ferries, including engineering housekeeping duties, system/equipment preventive maintenance, repairs and related support functions in conformance with agency policies and practices.
This position supports the marine department’s goal to provide safe, secure, reliable, regulatory compliant, environmentally sound and quality passenger ferry services. This position also supports the work of the Marine Mechanics and performs tasks as assigned.
The successful candidate will perform on a regular basis, the inspection and cleaning of vessel engineering, void spaces and vessel equipment, consistent with sound marine practices.
This position also performs routine checks of marine system levels and conditions such as operating fluids, hydraulics, coolants, tankages, lubricants, batteries, lighting, wiper blades, etc.
The successful candidate will support and assist as directed, the Marine Mechanics in maintaining vessels and associated marine systems and perform light-medium repairs, including:
- Efforts to ensure machinery and machinery spaces are maintained in a safe, orderly manner compliant with applicable requirements and following good marine practice.
- Performance of daily upkeep, preventive maintenance of the vessel’s main propulsion and auxiliary systems, such as diesel engines, water-jets, diesel generators, HVAC, plumbing and marine electronics and the organization of associated spare parts and supplies.
- The planned and ad-hoc repair of diesel propulsion engines, fuel systems, lubricating systems, marine electrical systems, water cooling systems, heat exchangers and related marine equipment.
This position supports as directed, routine inspections of the vessel and its components, checking on all operating and safety equipment in support of safe and reliable ferry operations.
As directed, the successful candidate will sail on vessels to support their upkeep and maintenance. Also as directed, the successful candidate will drive to area vendors to pick up vessel equipment, parts and supplies associated with repair efforts.
This position assists with inventory control and documentation for consumable liquids and spare parts and with ongoing retention of records of vessel/equipment maintenance and repair work, consistent with the manufacturer’s life-cycle servicing expectations.
The person in this position wears/dons applicable personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned job task in a potentially loud/hazardous work environment.
This position reports to the Marine Maintenance Manager.
Salary Range: The range for this position is $30.89 - $ 41.53 per hour, commensurate with experience. With rare exception, initial appointments are usually made at Step 1 ($30.89).

Kitsap Transit also provides employees and certain dependents with a free transportation pass on Kitsap Transit.
Hours of Work: Work will be performed on vessels after service hours during the week and on weekends. These hours may vary depending on the business needs of the agency. As the business needs of the agency change, applicants must also be available to work any hours of operation including weekends and all holidays. The schedule for this position may vary from week to week and may include weekend and holiday work on a permanent basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
Kitsap Transit employees who wish to apply must have a satisfactory performance and attendance record. Kitsap Transit Operators with any of the following criteria in the last twelve months are excluded from recruitment opportunities:

- more than two held customer complaints
- more than four unscheduled absences

Education and Experience: High school diploma/GED and three months experience in the upkeep, servicing and repair of vessels, marine engines and related marine equipment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Following are some highlights of what is needed to be successful in this position.

Licenses or Certifications Required:
- A valid Driver’s License
- A valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) within thirty days of hire.
Desired: Certification as a Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED).
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: This position requires vision, dexterity, strength, mobility, voice and hearing capabilities consistent with those set forth in USCG licensing standards for engineers (eCFR :: 46 CFR Part 10 Subpart C -- Medical Certification). This position may work during the hours of darkness, outdoors, at sea, and in stressful time-sensitive situations. This position will require lifting heavy objects up to 70 pounds, crouching for extended periods, lengthy mechanical work in very small spaces, climbing ladders and entering through narrow hatches & passageways. This position may be scheduled to work outside the typical workweek, required to work overtime, or asked to work outside normal/scheduled business hours to provide hands-on support.
