Wage rates are $17.34 to $21.67
Class A or B CDL with a good driving record is required.
Under general supervision performs a variety of duties involving the maintenance of streets, drains, signs, vehicles, equipment, water/sewer infrastructure, buildings, structures and grounds. Employees are expected to carry out duties in accordance with stated procedures and directions from the Operations Superintendent, the Street Maintenance Specialist or a Water Treatment/Distribution Operator Grade III. This position is supervised by the Operations Superintendent and is considered an entry-level position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Cleans and maintains roads and drainage channels, culverts, retention ponds, drop inlets and other structures or devices within the road right-of-way or easements.
Operates a street sweeper if properly licensed.
Drives a vactor truck if properly licensed. If not licensed to drive a vactor truck, operates the vactor portion of the truck when driven by others to a worksite.
Operates and performs limited maintenance on backhoes, dump trucks and other heavy equipment and fleet vehicles.
Assists in performing repairs and maintenance to streets including crack filling and asphalt pavement patching and repairs to storm drains and related infrastructure
Performs repairs and maintenance to street signs
Assists in setting manhole covers and grade rings and roadway valve box risers.
Performs limited concrete work related to curbs, storm drains and manholes.
Performs general housekeeping of buildings, pump stations and grounds.
Performs courier tasks such as pick-up and delivery of parts.
Performs painting and limited carpentry.
Assists in performing routine and emergency repairs to water system infrastructure.
Reads water meters as directed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Performs traffic control, including flagging and setting up proper barricades and warning signs as directed. Installs and maintains snow guideposts and poles.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs snow removal on roadways as directed.
Operates and maintains equipment such as hand and power tools, air compressor, service trucks, steam cleaner, grinder, welder, jackhammer, compaction equipment, sump pump, cut-off saw and winch.
Performs minor mechanical repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education and Experience Education equivalent to completion of High School. One year's experience operating heavy equipment including backhoe and dump truck, and cleaning, maintaining and repairing roads and storm drains is desired.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, storm drains and street signs; ability to perform minor mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and to a limited degree in writing; physical strength and agility; ability to work independently and under general direction; ability to get along well with co-workers and the public.
Physical Requirements
Physical strength, agility and fitness sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job effectively for an 8-hour or 10-hour workday. The job requires lifting of up to 70 lbs.; bending, climbing, crawling, twisting, grasping, reaching, kneeling, walking, including on uneven surfaces and inclines; hearing, talking, seeing.
Other Requirements
Workers in this classification may be required to work long hours. Must be available for overtime work and limited call-back or weekend work.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently working outdoors in varied weather conditions and temperatures, is exposed to noise, fumes, dust and toxic chemicals, and is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally required to work in confined spaces and is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, risk of electrical shock and vibration. Noise level is usually moderate, but may be loud.
Licenses
A valid Nevada or California motor vehicle driver's license and a good driving record are required; a valid Class A or B commercial driver's license with a tanker endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.
