Under direction perform responsible and specialized accounting work as it relates to general ledger accounting. Assist with all financial reporting requirements of the Business Office
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
1. Review general ledger accounts insuring that postings are correct and line item budgets are not exceeded. Report variances.
2. Prepare routine and corrective journal entries and reconcile
3. Prepare financial reporting records as required by various auditors, government agencies, boards and college departments.
4. Coordinates and tracks college's fixed assets
5. Assist in development of necessary controls to balance ledgers and coordinate audit reports for those accounts.
6. Serve as backup to Purchasing
7. Assist in recording and tracking credit card transactions.
8. Assist departments in answering questions related to budgets.
9. Coordinate with the JC Foundation to provide accounting and financial reporting services.
10. Prepare financial aid scholarship entries between funds.
11. Prepare and process monthly and fiscal year-end closing activities including reconciliations, adjusting entries, and regularly reconcile non-cash general ledger accounts for both the College and the Foundation.
12. Prepare monthly cash reconciliation including funds on deposit with banks and investment institutions.
13. Assist as needed with grant reconciliation and reporting.
14. Answer phone and assist with student account questions as needed.
15. Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College's beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.
16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller and/or VP of Finance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Internal: Frequent contact with staff within and outside of the Business office for the purpose of sharing information and resolving problems.
External: Regular contact with auditors in a service provider capacity.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM/REQUIRED
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration
Skills and Ability to:
Knowledge of Fund Accounting
Knowledge of Accounting Principles (GAAP and GASB)
Accounts Receivable and Payable Practices and Procedures
Budget Preparation, compilation and tracking
Basic and routine mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, and fractions)
Proficient in Microsoft Excel
Working knowledge of payroll preparation and distributions and Federal, State and City tax remittance transactions and compliance.
PREFERRED
Knowledge of:
Computer applications and computerized accounting systems
Michigan Public School Employee Retirement System (MPSERS) reporting and reconciliations
